Take Action for Literacy. Why Should You Volunteer

Literacy Action depends on the generosity of folks like you.  Either through your time, talent, or resources, we look to the community to join us in stopping what many call "America's Dirty Little Secret".   We have all heard that 1 in 5 Americans are functionally illiterate, over 800,000 alone in Metro Atlanta.   But, do you ever wonder what that really means for you?  How does it impact your life and what you can do about it?

Let's get down to brass tacks:  With an undereducated workforce, the country's growth as a global competitor declines and unemployment rises.  Low literacy remains the constant factor in crime, incarceration, poverty and high drop-out rates.  The greatest indicator of a child's success depends on the literacy level of his/her mother.  Without bridging the educational gap, the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy WILL continue.

Literacy Action provides academic, work, and life skills classes to help stop the cycle and bring our dirty little secret"to light.  You have the ability to make a difference by reading, teaching, learning, and listening.  Think about it.....where would you be without the ability to read?
